According to the most recent data, one in four Illinois students is Latino, and in contrast, only 7% of teachers are Latino. To address the mismatch between Latino students and Latino teachers, the committee Elevating Teachers/Teacher Pipeline of LULAC ED Council 5238 seeks to address equity issues in Latino educator recruitment and retention. Our key areas of concern are the Illinois teacher shortage and strengthening the Latino educator pipeline by partnering with statewide policy organizations to advocate for policy and legislation that can increase the pathways for Latino students to become educators, remain and to thrive in the profession. We participate in coalition meetings with other key stakeholders, educational institutions, and elected officials to give policy recommendations and propose legislation to address issues that contribute to the lack of Latino educator representation.
